Eleven men have been arrested during violent skirmishes at a demonstration by the English Defence League.

A 29-year-old WPC was taken to hospital after she suffered an arm injury while policing a cordon at the protest in Nottingham city centre.

All of those arrested during the march by 500 members of the EDL were held for public order offences and no-one was seriously injured, said Nottinghamshire Police.

One of those detained needed hospital treatment after he kicked a police dog, which retaliated and bit him. Read more.

The food crisis in poor nations coupled with the global economic downturn have led to a spike in world hunger, with more than one billion people going undernourished this year, UN agencies have said. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) said the figure of 1.02 billion, which is around 100 million people more than last year, is the highest rate in four decades. “The rising number of hungry people is intolerable,” Jacques Diouf, FAO director general, said on Wednesday, as an annual report on food security was released. “We have the economic and technical means to make hunger disappear, what is missing is a stronger political will to eradicate hunger forever,” he said. The report, compiled by the FAO and WFP, said the increase was a result of high food prices, and lower incomes and lost jobs, as well as a decline in foreign aid and investment in poor countries. “This loss of income is compounded by food prices that are still relatively high in the local markets of many poor countries,” the FAO said.
